When I pick up a book (this publication is really an article – took me about 10 minutes to get through it) about gardening, I want details. Because I NEED details so that I can grow my crops successfully.

Like the vast, VAST majority of slim Kindle “books” on the topic of gardening, this one lacks details. It begins with a chapter on the care and maintenance of veggies in a general, ten thousand-foot-view way, but skips on the essential, detailed info regarding healthy soil, watering, etc. (E.g., just saying, "Your crops need plenty of water" is not helpful.)

After that first chapter is a list of perennial plants and a brief description of each, which reads much more like a blog post than an informative book.Details on how to actually grow the different crops are lacking. How do you plant each vegetable? Starting from seed versus from crowns is critical in any discussion on growing asparagus, but the author doesn’t even gloss over this info. And why should it be a challenge to keep an asparagus patch weed-free? Ever heard of mulch?

Even though malabar spinach is only perennial in tropical areas, the author doesn't tell you that it so easily self-seeds that it acts like a perennial.. He also fails to mention how to turn garlic into a perennial crop.

What about the rave reviews? I have to wonder when I read a review that goes on and on about how wonderful the author is and how qualified he is to write the book – and the book provides no such personal information. I also have to wonder when a reviewer calls an author by his nickname. These kinds of reviews typically indicate that they are not organic reviews by perfect strangers, but reviews that the author requested.

Love this book. Great for Vegetarians
Great little book to help anyone who wishes to grow veggies at home. There are many good suggestions in the book on how to do this. I would recommend the book for any beginner gardener.
"Perennial Vegetables" by William Blackburn is a wonderful book which covers the mechanics of gardening for vegetables like artichoke, asparagus and sea kale-a Paleo diet food. The book is written well with very detailed guidance on the fine points of gardening.

For instance, the author mentions the importance of sunlight, good soil, water and sometimes shade for certain types of vegetables. At times, adding organic matter or compost enriches the soil to promote more optimal growth. Some vegetables like asparagus can take a few years to cultivate; however, crops can be harvested for years thereafter.

Overall, Bill's book is very instructive for a prospective gardener who would like to succeed early in this process. The presentation is brief but to the point.
Interesting article but far from a book. This could have just as well been a blog. Only lists vegetables that you don't have to replant every year but not a lot of detail on how to grow. I received a promotional discount for my honest review.
This has some good ideas for perennial veggies, but you need to be aware of what zone that you live in, because not all of them will do will with a short growing season. I don't have a garden anymore, and while I have grown several of these, some of them never did well when I did have a garden due to the short gardening season where I lived. It would be nice to have pictures of the types of veggies that the author recommends. There are a very few pictures, but they do help people to identify the types of plants. It's a short book but has some good ideas in it.
Huge disappointment. This is not a book, but a pamphlet of about 22 pages (not counting disclaimers and Table of Contents etc.), and 7 of those are generic gardening advice that plants need sun, water, and good soil. The type is huge and widely spaced, so ultimately very little information on the remaining 15 pages that are about the subject. And though I have eaten them during an Army survival course on wild edibles, "Common Dandelion" or "Fiddlehead Fern" are hardly perennial vegetables most vegetable gardeners are looking to cultivate. Other offerings won't grow in the Northern Hemisphere and mention being native to the tropics. Book promises photos, but there are none. It took only several minutes to read the entire pamphlet, mistakes and all. As a list you could Google for free, this pamphlet is not worth 10 cents, much less the 10 dollar asking price. I feel totally ripped off and am amazed there are any good reviews for this pamphlet. I guess we all have friends and family that support us in our endeavors...
The author of this book is very knowledgeable about how one should plant perennial vegetables. In this book, he lists 21 vegetables that, if planted and cared for properly, only need to be planted once but can be harvested forever. Some of these 21 vegetables include artichoke, fiddlehead fern, rhubarb, Jerusalem artichoke, bunching onion, fennel, potato onion, New Zealand yam, Malabar spinach, sea kale, salad burnet, Japanese parsley, common dandelion, and radicchio. The author gives a little background, fact, or tip about planting and/or cooking each vegetable. My only problem with this list of vegetables is that, prior to reading this book, I had never heard about most of them.

Disclosure I purchased this book while it was being offered for free. I was under no obligation to review it.
