What could possibly go wrong with pretending to date your straight best friend? As if walking in on his boyfriend cheating on him wasn’t bad enough, Caleb finds himself facing the prospect of attending his sister’s Hawaiian destination wedding alone--unless he accepts Ethan’s offer to go with him and pretend to be the boyfriend he deserves. Ethan might be straight, but he’s charming, sensible, and looks good in a suit. Caleb knows that it’s the kind of plan that’s likely to come back and bite him, but it’s better than having to admit to his family that his love life is a disaster. Besides, he can keep his secret crush on Ethan just as secret while they’re on vacation. Can’t he? Things get complicated when Ethan realises he might not be as straight as he thought he was, and takes the opportunity to experiment with Caleb while they’re away--after all, they’re pretending to be dating anyway. Adding a few kisses and a little more affection into the mix can’t hurt. It soon becomes obvious to both men that they want more from each other than they first thought--but actually admitting that and risking their friendship over it seems impossible. Between the cold feet, wedding drama, fistfights, fear, and confusion, can Ethan and Caleb find a way to tell each other how they feel? Or will it really all be over once they get home?

The Wedding Date Sean Ashcroft Books

This book is a tricky one to grade. It has quite a few technical deficiencies but I also found it to be rather an engaging romance for most of the time I spend reading it.

The chief deficiencies are a flimsy storyline and a lack of development of the setting and characters. Ethan poses as Caleb’s boyfriend at his sister’s wedding to head off difficulties with Caleb’s family, who are expecting him to bring a companion. This is a well-used romance plot device that always seems contrived and unrealistic, but here it is compounded by the fact that most of these family members rarely appear in the book at all.

The main characters are pretty one-dimensional. Ethan and Caleb are supposedly such great friends but we aren’t given much backstory to show how that came about. Their dialogue doesn’t indicate the natural, taking each other’s presence for granted kind of relationship of close friends, either. They are too polite, always thanking each other and thinking how they don’t deserve the other one’s kindness.

The most enjoyable part of the book in my opinion is when Ethan asks Caleb to be his boyfriend for the duration of their time in Hawaii. Their carefully developing physical relationship shows the strength of their emotions and the author displays a certain delicacy of language that I appreciated. But it then takes them far too long to realise each other’s true feelings. Neither can believe the other wants to continue the sexual relationship after the holiday ends, with Caleb being particularly obtuse. I was getting quite annoyed with them both by the time the happy ending rolled around. But there were glints of promise here that might lead me to try another Sean Ashcroft book.

The Wedding Date Sean Ashcroft Books Reviews

A delightful and fun read. I love happy endings
Love this story. I have already read it twice. A good go to heart warmer. I highly recommend it. Hits you right in the feels 💜
My name is Ron and my husband is Dan. We fell in love 24 years ago on the campus of Michigan State University. We legally married in Iowa in 2009 in the month of June. We're still in this kind of love, and it just grows stronger every passing day. YES, true love between two men does indeed happen... I'm not telling our story here. But it is just as real as this work of art depicts, and more so! Come read a true thriller of the heart and let you hope and dreams be real as well.
A super sweet, quick read. Ethan is an absolute puppy dog, and Caleb is neuroticly adorable as well. The book had some pacing issues, making it feel like it was jumping time or scenes (and then it dragged at the end with multiple time jumps). The book is driven by the two leads insecurities and their fixation on "only in hawaii," which was a bit obnoxious. It was a sweet read, but not much to take away (so it's sweet but won't stay with you long).
I loved the story of Caleb and Ethan, best friends for years, after Caleb has broken up with his latest loser boyfriend, while still continuing to crush on Ethan, his straight best friend. Ethan would do anything for Caleb, help him with his latest in the string of broken hearts and going to Hawaii for a wedding so his family won't pick on him for his choices. While in Hawaii, Ethan realizes that his feelings for Caleb run deeper than friendship. It's a great story with wonderful characters!!
I have read most of Sean's book and this one by far is my favorite. Both characters are the kind that jump out of the page and grab onto your heart. Caleb who wants nothing more than a relationship with his best friend Ethan already making concessions for him in his life. Ethan who is incredibly sweet and thoughtful these two are perfect for each other and make for a wonderful weekend read!!!!! Highly recommend!!!!
This is my first Sean Ashcroft book and I enjoyed the story. my only criticism is what I'm seeing by a lot of authors writing man to man fiction is one of the Characters is always a straight man in their stories. In reality a straight man could never ever have a sexual relationship with another man, if there are 100 percent straight, they are only interested in women. Ethan is bisexual, so why don't the authors just write that their characters are bisexual and have the character unsure of his sexuality, so we as the read know he has this inner turmoil in his mind, where there could be a slight attraction to men.

I know the authors have this premise in their books to appeal to a female audience but as a gay man trying to turn a straight man Bisexual or gay when they are 100 percent straight, you would have better success in trying to stop the sun coming up tomorrow.
